| Iegor Gran, author of the excellent novel 'NGO!', which blew away the sanctimonious sentiment surrounding non-governmental organisations, had the following to say in Libération dated 7 September (special section apparently not published on the web):
France, cultural exception? Country of freedom? Balls! France, country of jealousy and fear, eaten away by an inferiority complex, little nation of little conformists! France, which waves its declaration of human rights like a magic charm, a Bové-esque monarchy, a cause for worrying with its good conscience wrapped in chauvinism! With regards to the new literary season dripping with the blood of 9-11 victims he simply declared, 'You get the literature you deserve.' Who are these immigrants who, having lived in France for years, dare to make such commentary. I'm shocked. France, exception culturelle? Pays de liberté? Mes choses! France, pays de jalousie et de trouille, rongée par le complexe d'infériorité, petite nation de petits conformismes! France, qui agite sa déclaration des droits de l'homme comme une amulette, monarchie bovésienne, consternante de bonne conscience tissue de chauvinisme! Au sujet de cette rentrée littéraire fwançaise dégoulinante du sang des victimes du 11-9-2001 il dit simplement, 'On a la littérature qu'on mérite.' Qui sont donc ces immigrés qui, vivant en France depuis des années, osent parler de cette façon. Je suis outré! Outré! |
